INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

Today is the eleventh of October and its a significance day being the International Day of the Girl Child. It is our collective responsibility to empower the future generation of girls, tell them they can be what they want to be as long as it doesn't harm them or anyone else. It is also our collective responsibility to let them know that being a girl isn't a boundary that holds them back from achieving greatness.

Gone are the days when people believed the role and usefulness of the girl child ended in the kitchen. Today woman are making a great impact around the world.

The theme for this year's celebration is WITH HER; A SKILLED GIRL FORCE. Apart from educating the girl child another way to empower her is by encouraging her to learn various skills which will help her become useful to herself, the society and to generate income in the future. The various skills to learn could be photography, graphics designing, makeup, web development, digital marketing, shoemaking, amongst others.

There are 1.1 billion girls in the world and every one of them deserves equal opportunities for a better future.

On this day I celebrate the girl child, I recognize and celebrate the potentials of every young woman out there and the fact that she is always a voice to reckon with. I celebrate the strength that keeps her moving even when the world turns against her. Let us all work together to educate, empower, celebrate, honor, respect, love and protect her. Stop trying to subjugate her. Give her a voice today.

5. Yusra Mardini is a Syrian refugee who at age 17 swam for three hours from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos, while also pushing a dingy with 20 others. She was a swimmer in the first refugee team to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
